Wilson, Ian. Undiscovered: The Fascinating World of Undiscovered Places, Graves, Wrecks and Treasure, pub 1987, Beech Tree.
In the late 18th Century, 800 gold coins were unearthed during the construction of the Basingstroke Canal in Hampshire, England. These were immediately connected to an older legend of a vast treasure buried by the Marquis of Winchester during the first English Civil War when the Basing House, which sat nearby, was besieged and eventually overrun by Parlimentary forces. Here Wilson describes the looting and destruction of Basing House, the discovery of the gold coins, the subsequent modern efforts to locate the rumored treasure, and even provides a map of the relevant property.
I remember we had this book when we were kids. There's also a story about where King Arthur was buried.
